Recycled copper (from the copper fountain that once graced downtown Edmonds), new copper and stainless steel. This piece combines the old with the new. Reaching far back into history and touching on the “mosquito Fleets” that skirted around the sound delivering messages and supplies, as well as to the brand newness of construction and recent revitalization with young families moving into the local neighborhoods. It is my intention to touch on the notion of this community flowing together (old and new) very much like one might see a flock of birds swarming about in the sky, reacting and flowing together from one place to the next. The people of Edmonds, from and outside perspective, seem willing to be where they are; as the spells out in a water like gesture in short-hand; “You Are Here”.

This piece makes use of the existing drop ceiling, using plastic panels and 18-inch acrylic mirrored security domes to replace ceiling panels. These domes and panels create a pathway to guide the viewer from the lobby to and up the stairwell to the foyer and back. This not only invigorates the space keeping it constantly active and moving but surrounds and individual with a community reflected in their own image that evolves in relationship to whom uses the space.

Titled cloud haiku, this works harkens to the timeless American love affair with wandering, as it softens the “funk of our post-industrial present” on a literal landing pad. It poetically marries travel and site, possibility, waiting, wondering, wandering and resting. This shower of bronze pillows functions like an urban Zen Garden, a place of rest and contemplation where the sky meets the ground. It is my wish to invoke a sense of wonderment and dreaminess in the viewers mind altering their perspective on an otherwise utilitarian space. It is my feeling that my work thrives within spaces of unforgiving identity, balancing between what they are and what thoughts they provoke.
