INSCAPE, INS Building (across Airport Way from Uwajimaya)
Seattle, WA

The event “INSCAPE: Passages” was held at the former INS building of Seattle, WA, once an immigration office. The site was one of much suffering and torment. Filled with interrogation rooms, incarceration cells and bureaucratic dens; my first tour of this space was dizzying. The event was a series of site-specific installations and performances. Many artists in the show were immigrants and shared stories of abuse and bullying they encountered. The energy of the building spoke for itself. I created a work titled Another; Black Eye. The audio was a collaboration with a Seattle musician and noise artist Spencer Moody. It was culled from a Mathcore band from the late 90’s called Botch, music well known for its aggressiveness and high tempo, as well as moments of singular instrumentation. In this audiological collaboration we isolated these solo sounds, which then played on the amplifier at a slightly uncomfortable level throughout the duration of install and the exhibition.
