Copper and stainless steel
You Are Here, is located on the Southeast corner of City Hall in Edmonds, WA. It is made of recycled copper (from the copper fountain that once graced downtown Edmonds and was destroyed by a drunk driver in 1998), new copper, and stainless steel. This piece combines the old with the new reaching far back into history and touching on the “Mosquito Fleets” that skirted around the Puget Sound delivering messages and supplies, as well as referring to the brand-newness of construction and young families moving into the local neighborhoods. It was my intention to touch on the notion of this community flowing together (old and new), very much like one might see a flock of birds swarming about in the sky, reacting and flowing together from one place to the next. The people of Edmonds, from an outside perspective, seem content to be where they are, the stainless line, which spells out in a water-like gesture in Gregg shorthand, You are Here.
